Why is the University of Missouri throwing money away?

What exactly is the University of Missouri paying Baker & Associates for? Baker & Associates apparently has a contract to search for a new UM System President, but they really haven't done much. They picked a guy from the New England area who turned down the job for a private sector job in Florida. You mean to tell me that no one got a feeling that the guy would do that? Baker and Associates should have been fired if they didn't smell that one coming. And if they did smell it coming, why did they pursue him?

Now, they apparently approached Sara Martinez Tucker about being a candidate for the job. Ms. Tucker was just confirmed for the U.S. under secretary of education in Dec. 2006. It was a cold shot in the dark thinking she would want to jump ship already. And why would you want someone who would jump ship that soon after going through confirmation.

Plus, Sara Martinez Tucker already has made a questionable decision in her short term as under secretary of education. Nelnet, a student loan firm, was found to have overbilled the federal government by $278 million. Sara Martinez Tucker ruled that Nelnet wouldn't have to pay back the $278 million. Nelnet made a $50,000 contribution to the Hispanic Scholarship fund while Tucker was at the helm.

This is another reason why Norm Stewart should be the next UM System President.

&nsbp Here is an article from the Post-Dispatch about how Mizzou is depriving students of load opportunities available to them through MOHELA and other private programs. I don't pretend to understand the whole college loan situation, but a State University keeping its students from using the lower-cost state-sponsored loan option doesn't seem right to me.

House Hearings on MSHSAA

There is a bill in the Missouri House sponsored by the Rep. from Chesterfield, Jane Cunningham, that would put the Missouri State High School Activities Association under the control of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The bill is not likely to get a hearing during this legislative session, but it is good that someone is finally noticing how bad MSHSAA is at what they do. Several people testified in favor of the bill including a coach not named Floyd Irons who was suspended for supposed recruiting and an athlete forced to sit out a year because of a transfer for athletic reasons. MSHSAA looked for people to testify on its behalf, but the Vashon athletes conveniently weren't home at their listed residence in the Vashon district.

The 20 year old that was driving the car in which a 17 year old was killed had been arrested 60 times previously by the Columbia Police. How are you on the streets and driving after being arrested 60 times? I hope this man was driving without a license. When exactly is enough, enough and we throw away the key? Can we at least ship him to a deserted island? He obviously isn't an asset to society.

Looks like shots were exchanged between two vehicles about 2:50 pm on Wednesday at Grindstone and Bearfield. A police officer stopped a vehicle going North on Providence shortly afterwards and discovered a man in the back had been shot. A vehicle was stopped on Bearfield carrying four people.

MU Diversity Fee Is Such Crap

I am incredibly saddened to see that students at the University of Missouri-Columbia will soon have $3.19 each of their student activity fees going into a fund solely for minority groups.

(Yes, I know MSA changed the wording so that all groups are technically eligible for the funds as long as it is used for "diversity" programs. That is just a formality)

Students already pay about $10 a semester to fund student organizations on campus. That fee goes to the the Organization Resource Group, which distributed over $320,000 last year to student organizations. The organizations apply for funding and their applications are evaluated by a 12-member committee of students. Apparently that isn't fair enough. Guess how much money IFC and PHA greek organizations are eligible for of that? NONE. NPHC organizations can get funding to send their members to National Conventions, whereas IFC and PHA members have to foot the bill themselves.

Apparently I am slow. I just read the Sports Illustrated article about Sean Coffey and how he blames Mizzou for him not getting a quality education. Would someone explain to me how Coffey can blame Mizzou for his lack of a degree? He got a handout and he chose to not take advantage of it. I don't believe the football program forced him into anything. He chose his own path. It is not anyone's fault but his own that he is without a contract and without a degree.

Do UM Curators Care?

Here's an article from Bryan Burwell in today's Post-Dispatch about how much the Jim Brady case is still costing the University of Missouri system.
Jim Brady, the UMSL basball coach, won a $1.275 million judgement against the University three months ago for age discrimination. The UM system probably could have settled out of court for a whole lot less money, but that would have been too wise. Now, the Curators are fighting the judgement and spending that much more money.

Be sure to read the RFT article. I doubt UM has much of a chance on this one.

Does the Missouri Senate Hate Mizzou?

Senate Bill 389 is the bill that includes all the stuff about selling MOHELA assets, which may be a horrible idea for MOHELA. It also includes the Access Missouri Financial Assistance Program. This program would give grants to students for higher education. The amount of the grant would be determined by demonstrated financial need and would be renewable with a 2.5 GPA (4.0 scale). Here are the basic amount ranges for the grants:

$300 to $1,000 for public two-year institutions
$1,000 to $2,150 for public four-year institutions
$2,000 to $4,600 for private institutions

Does something seem wrong about those figures? Why is the State of Missouri giving students more money to attend private schools? Shouldn't Missouri be encouraging its students to attend a public Missouri school?

If the grants are based on financial need doesn't it make more sense to encourage students to attend a public school, which is almost always cheaper? That way, a larger percentage of the schooling is covered. Maybe it's just me, but I would think that the goal of a government program would be to help as many people as possible.

Here's the link to the Tribune's listing of people who made $100,000 plus from MU, the UM system, and University Health Care last year. Here's the link to the story. 824 people make six figures in the UM system, including MU Health Care. In five years, the list has grown by 47 percent. Isn't that about what tuition has grown by in the last five years?

UM Curators Hire Search Firm

First off, I don't like the idea of the Curators hiring a search firm to find the new system president. Maybe it is just a sign of the times that UM has to pay $125,000 plus expenses to a search firm out of Atlanta in order to find a quality candidate for the job. I like this article from KSDK.com that says the firm is being paid to "develop a criteria for a new president and then recruit candidates". There has got to be someone out of the entire system who could work up a pretty decent set of qualities that a university system president should have.

Greek Houses to install sprinkler systems

----This is a good thing. Houses with that many electronic things plugged in at one time need to take all the precautions they can. In the Missourian article, it says that Jeffery Beeson, the IFC PR guy, argued for a longer timeframe apparently saying that Fraternities and Sororities are closed during the summer months, thus giving them fewer months to raise the funds necessary to install the sprinkler systems. I didn't realize that a lifelong brotherhood meant lifelong only during school months.

UM Curators may hire a search firm

----This Tribune article mentions that the Curators may hire an executive search firm to hire the new UM system president. That's a waste of money. I would much rather see them put together a committee compromised of prominent system alumni to do the search.

Floyd Leaving Isn't Sad

The Maneater ran an article about Elson Floyd leaving the UM system to take a job with Washington State University. Elson said he was sad to leave and some Curators said it was a sad day for the University. I would like to call BullS*** on both of those. Elson can not say it is a sad day; it's not like he is being forced to take the other job. A position he viewed as a better job came open and he ditched UM to take that job. The Curators can't consider it a sad day for the University. They got ditched by their man. Who really cares if Floyd is leaving? Don't call the man a saint. He left UM high and dry. I wonder if we can roll Pinkel and his cronies up in the package as well? Send them packing ASAP. I would feel more comfortable in the Sun Bowl with Chase Daniel calling all the shots. Heck, let Chase Daniel lead the offense on the field while Chase Patton wears the headset. Brian Smith can take over the defense.

Here is a link to a story in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch today that mentions the recent MSA election mess. It talks about the increasing stakes of student government elections in the area. A couple high points

Current MSA president John Andersen is quoted about how it is important for MSA to keep their integrity intact. I guess the BEC didn't hear that one. Must have been covered up by a Ali/Robinson poster.

The guy who runs the American Student Government Association says the these election rules are so idiotic because Student Courts and election boards don't have much else to do. What does he know? I mean, here at Mizzou the Student Court was too busy to even give a slate fair treatment.

In the world of Collegiate Women's Basketball, Pat Summitt is bigger than Dean Smith and Bobby Knight put together. Recently, she flew into St. Charles County to try a persuade Shakara Jones to play ball for the Lady Vols next season. She wound up losing this recruiting battle to Mizzou and Cindy Stein. The 6'2" Jones, a senior at Francis Howell Central, averaged over 25 points and 3 blocks per game last season in leading the Lady Spartans to a 24-3 record.

Tigers Fall in Polls

A drop in the standings this week for the football Tigers was expected like A&M expected that fake field goal yesterday. Chase Daniel's team dropped to #24 in the AP poll and out of the ESPN/AllState poll. They were 23 points out of the #25 spot in the USA Today poll. The first BCS rankings came out and the Tigers clocked in at #24. The Aggies are #23 in the AP poll and get shut out of the BCS top 25. Oklahoma opened at #22 in the BCS rankings. Things don't look great after hearing Peterson is likely out for the year after this run

David Wasinger, a UM Curator, is in trouble with the UMSL Faculty council for making comments in a board meeting that they deemed to be homophobic. Wasinger apparently made a comment about how schools have better things to spend their money on than "queer theory" courses.

The most recent editorial in the Maneater is calling for the T.A. Brady's name to be dropped from the name of the new student center. The editorial points out that students are paying over half for the new student center and should be able to have a voice in naming it. In my view, the "university" isn't even kicking any money into the project. The 49% that they say comes from the "university" is coming from Campus Dining and the Bookstore. How did those two get all this money? By making a profit off students.
It's about time for Mizzou students to face facts. No one in power in this state cares about college students. Why do you think tution is so high? Because the powers that be in this state aren't putting enough money into higher education. Folks that can't afford the tuition can take out loans from MOHELA, where they won't exactly be charged rock-bottom prices. Why else would the state be able to sell the loans for $350 million? Oh yeah, and don't think that $350 million is going to go to bring tuition down. It's going for more buildings. The names of all the buildings built with that money should include "middle class". The Matt Blunt Middle Class Life Sciences Building. Has a nice ring to it, doesn't it.
The Curators don't care about the students. They pitched a fit when the students wanted one darn vote on their happy little board. It was like a woman trying to vote way back when or something. One Curator went and complained to anyone that would listen about what kinds of events student fees were paying for. Students were the ones deciding what the money was spent on.
Anyone who says the powers that be at Mizzou care that much about students is lying. Lying like if I said that T.A. Brady had a gay friend.

Tigers Move Up In Rankings

After an above-average showing against Texas Tech, the football Tigers have moved up in the newest polls, out today. The Tigers are #19 in the AP poll with 469 points, five points behind #18 Oregon and 38 points in front of Nebraska. The USA Today poll has Mizzou at #21, 73 points behind the 5-1 Cornhuskers. The ESPNU/Allstate Poll has Chase Daniel's squad #18, in front of both Nebraska and Oregon. The Ohio State University is #1 in all 3 polls.

The people over at the Real Mizzou History blog really have their panties in a bunch over this T.A Brady thing. Their latest post talks about good ol' T.A. wanting to rid the University of homosexuals in the 40s. I find this hillarious. That time period saw a major push in Congress to rid the Federal Government of homosexuals. If you didn't know, Congress is full of people elected by a majority of their area. So, if the majority of the country thought the same way Mr. Brady thought, was he that bad a guy? Can we really fault a guy for thinking the same way the majority of the country thought at the time? We're talking using the logic from 50-60 years ahead of his time to evaluate the guy.
We all know slavery is wrong now, but way back when Thomas Jefferson owned slaves. This was a father of our country. Should we crucify his name now for what he thought then? That was the jest of a letter to the editor in the latest Maneater. Seems like kind of the same thing. The lady makes a good point.
One of the main goals of the people over at the Real Mizzou History blog is rename the new student center, anything that doesn't refer to T.A. Brady I guess. Why don't we just name the thing after a gay black man? That should please most everyone. My choice is to sell the naming rights to the highest bidder and then use that money to keep students from having to foot the bill . But then again, everything at Mizzou nowadays has to revolve around diversity.

MUPD has banned kegs and "bulk quantities" of alcohol on University Propery, that includes during tailgating. This makes slightly less sense than banning alcohol in fraternity houses. Considering the arrests they make when people rush the field and the MIPs they give out during tailgating, I guess this falls right in line with their policies.

The new law lets officers decide just how much bulk quantity is. That sounds like a great plan. Nothing could go wrong with that at all. Can you imagine someone fighting this ticket? "Your Honor, I drink alot. I'm a big guy" Yeah, nothing can go wrong with this. Mike Alden, sounds like you can kiss some donations buh-bye.

Dustin Diamond is performing Sep 7-9 at Deja Vu, STAY AWAY. I made the mistake last year when he came of actually seeing the show. Not only did I have to pay the high beer prices upstairs, I had to pay for the tickets cause I couldn't find someone with an Office Party. You would think finding a Vu Office Party would be much like finding a flaming liberal at Mizzou. If I wasn't so thrifty, I would have walked out of the show. When he took a break from making cruel comments and sick jokes, he was just plain bad. Someone went up to him after the show and asked him to do the world a favor by quitting his stand up career.

Kudos to the City of Columbia for a Great Gesture

Columbia is such a great city. Great roads, a great library, great schools, and it's great that the city of Columbia gave the Daniel Boone All-Stars a parade down Broadway for their accomplishments in the Little League World Series. Although they lost in pool play, the COMO kids became the first Midwest team to win a LLWS game, snapping a 0-16 streak.

Team Columbia Falls 2-1 in LLWS

The Columbia team in the Little League World Series fell 2-1 today to the Oregon team and will not make it out of pool play at the LLWS, going 1-2. The losses came in the team's first and third games, each by one run. The team won their second game 14-5.

Ryan Phillips gave up one earned run in pitching a complete game and stirking out 10 against Orgeon. A single in the top of the final frame knocked in the go-ahead run for Oregon and proved to be the run that would end this LLWS experience for the Como Kids.

The Midwest team (the Como Kids) topped the New Englanders (Team Chowder) 14-5 today in the Little League World Series. The game was rescheduled from the night before and played in front of 9,338 people at Little League Volunteer Stadium in Williamsport, PA. Landon Clapp led the charge for the Como Kids on both sides of the ball, going 3-3 with three triples, two RBIs and also getting the win on the mound. All of the teams in USA Pool B are currently 1-1 in pool play.

Team Columbia will play again Monday (8/21) at 7 pm CST on ESPN 2. Ryan Phillips, the #1 starter takes the mound for the hometown team in the last game of pool play. The top 2 teams from the two US pools advance to the US Semifinals.

For those of you who didn't know, a Columbia, Missouri team is representing the Midwest in the Little League World Series. The Daniel Boone National All-Stars breezed throught the Midwest Regional going 6-0 including a 2-0 win over the Iowa team in the Regional Championship. The Columbia team had a rough outing in its first game of the LLWS, falling 1-0 to the Southwest team in extra innings.

The Columbia team was scheduled to play the New England team Saturday night. That game is switched to Sunday at Noon et. due to the weather.

Article on Mizzou Football Player Jamar Smith

Linked below is an article detailing why Mizzou Football player Jamar Smith has been acting up in practice and partially why he lost his starting spot to Ziggy Hood.

Apparently, part of the problem deals with Jamar's brother being put in jail in Flordia on robbery charges. Jamar's 19 year old brother seem to be blaming him for his problems. I hate to get into family issues too much, but this does affect Mizzou's Football team.

This looks a whole lot like someone blaming someone else for their problems. Jamar's brother seems to think that his brother leaving for college led him down the wrong path. Sounds a lot like a load of crap to me, anyone else?

Jamar, it ain't you fault. Quit letting people make you think it is. Your brother needs to own up to his actions.

Collegehumor.com, which may be viewed more in Mizzou fraternity houses than WebCt and Blackboard combined, has been sold. The parent company of the site was sold for an undisclosed amount. Rumors that may or may not come from reputable sources place the amount north of $20 million. I really can't put into words how much I envy the founders of Collegehumor.com right now, I mean that's a heck of a lot of money.

I am really perplexed at some of the things that have come out of MU in the last week or so. I'll reference each thing by its corresponding Columbia Tribune or Missourian Article

UM curators meet to discuss meeting efficiency
--I really don't see how it can be hard to have efficient meetings, especially when you are dealing with people who have been in the business world for 15+ years. Apparently, the MU curators don't know how to pull one off though. They brought in a consultant to tell them how to have efficient meetings. One of the things that came from the "brainstorming session" was the announcement that two new committees would be formed, one on governance and one on external relations. People, you are a nine-member board, work together.

"And in the future, the board’s two-day meetings will use the first day for committee meetings and the second day for full board sessions. Committees will bring recommendations to the full board for discussion. In the past, the board’s committees met in the presence of the full board, and all members joined in discussion."
----Ok, a couple things with this paragraph from the Tribune article. 1)If you are going to have committees, why have them meet in the presence of the whole board? Then isn't everyone really on the committee? Seems to me that someone just wanted a cool title. 2)Having committee meetings and then bringing the suggestions to the full board for discussion is a waste of time. You will just have to bring the rest of the board up to speed anyways. It's not like this is the Senate or the House of Reps, this is a Nine-member board. I guess the Board president, Angela Bennett, thought of this, but how in the hell did she come to this conclusion?

"Bennett said the new system would eliminate duplicate conversations."

Actually, wouldn't it increase duplicate conversations? because before everyone heard everything or did I read that wrong?

Curators request more control over coaches’ contracts
--Elson Floyd, way to come up with common sense "executive orders". His latest says that coaches can't recieve buyout clauses that exceed the base salary remianing on their contract. No shit, Elson. It's bad enough that someone can get fired and still get $574,000 like Quinn did or the $250,000 that Creg Williams got from the St. Louis Public School District, but to issue an "executive order" saying that? Seems self serving. Why not just say issue one saying "we will use common sense when dealing with contracts"? Obviously, you haven't been doing that when Mike Anderson has it in his contract that he will get $500,000 for each season remaining on his contract should he get bought out. His base salary is $250,000. I don't know what your common sense says, but mine says that that ain't right. Who reviews these things?

Curators to hone UM image
--The curators described the university as "complex and disjointed but also successful and focused". Is that possible? Don't disjointed and focused cancel each other out? Maybe I found why they can't have efficient meetings, and I don't even get paid to consult. One thing that the Curators want is a central public relations station. They mention that the media reports bad things about the university rather than good things . That's really funny because at a recent Curators' meeting, David Wasinger basically accused the Organization Resource Group at Missour-Columbia of misusing student fee money by allocating student funds to a student group to bring Artist Andres Serrano to MU. So, the Curators asked for a detailed report of how the student fee money is spent. The ORG staff worked double time to compile a report and send it off. Two weeks later, Wasinger still hadnt gone through it. Now, if Wasinger had done his homework before accusing, wouldn't we have avoided that accusation being made in the media? The ORG gets roughly $10 from each student at MU. Of that money, over $300,000 is allocated out to student organziations through a 12-member board that evaluates each funding request. Sounds pretty fair. Maybe Wasinger should have reported on the good things that the ORG does, like funding parts of Sustain Mizzou's recycling work, or bringing Noam Chomsky to Columbia?

The University of Missouri-Columbia has dropped its exclusive Coke contract. A recently signed deal makes Pepsi the beverage of choice for Campus Dining as of August 1. 75% of products sold in the c-stores must be Pepsi products and the remaining 25% can be from anyone. Coke still has a contract with MU Athletics to be the main drink however. Maybe Coke is paying Alden that $50,000 since Walsworth isn't anymore?

A former MU football player has been arrested for using a stolen credit card and an MU basketball player may be involved as well. Alex Woodley, a former cornerback on the football team, turned himself in to police. Woodley was kicked off the team for violating team rules prior to the 2005 season but was allowed to stay in school and returned to the team before being kicked off the team again recently. Woodley, a Redshirt Junior from Mesquite, TX, is still listed on the team roster on mutigers.com. The website lists him as a walk-on trying to earn a scholarship. Read his bio by clicking on the first mention of his name.

Kalen Grimes, a center on the MU basketball team, is also mentioned in the article, but has not been charged as of yet.

Mid-Missouri Idol Finale

The place to be this Thursday night is the Missouri Theatre on 9th street in The District. That's where the Mid-Missouri Idol Finale is being held. Eleven contestants have been chosen, five males and six females, to compete starting at 6 pm. After watching the finale, head over to Big 12 for $.75 triple wells or to Harpo's for Quarter draws.

Mavs Stadium Appears To Be A Go

The plan to build a baseball stadium on the American Legion site in Columbia was given preliminary approval by the City Council on Monday. The stadium complex would be built it two phases with the second phase including retail space and restaurants. You can read the Missourian article here

--Who would have thought that kids like to play baseball and softball as much as possible in the summertime? Maybe Mr. Hindman should pay a little more attention to this town, he is like the mayor and all.

--Most families that attend the games go for the experience, they could care less about winning. The college kids that attended the games went to watch baseball and drink cheap beer. If you give the guys the opportunity to say how much better they are at baseball, that's a plus.

Tony Temple. . .I don't even know what to say

So I am pretty sure that when you are recovering from shoulder surgery, you shouldn't get in a fistfight.

That's exactly what happened to Tony Temple as reported by the Columbia Tribune here

So, let me sum up what appears to have happened:

Temple's girlfriend, Kendra Power (check out her MU softball profile)got angry at a kitchen worker at Bennigan's at the Courtyard by Marriot hotel (out at the AC exit off 63). The argument was originally over the kitchen employee messing up an order. As it escalated, Power called Temple to come up to deal with it. The argument moved outside and all 3 (Temple, Power, and the kitchen employee) got into a fistfight. Cops came and all 3 were arrested. Temple got out on $500 bond for the misdemeanor. The article didn't say what happened to the others.

I really would like to have been a fly on a wall for this altercation. I'm sure it was handled without the utmost maturity. I mean cmon, when do see football players not acting like fine, upstanding citizens?

Hot 100

Two women with MU ties have made the Real Hot 100 list. The list was created to highlight women "who are breaking barriers, fighting stereotypes, and making a difference in their communities or the nation" according to the website.
Anglea Vo and Jacke Cook-Eberle both made the final 100. The final 100 was culled from over 200 nominees representing 30 states.

Mid-Missouri Idol

KMIZ and Q106.1 are putting on Mid-Missouri Idol contest all through June. The first audtion date was held on June 1. The next is tomorrow night, June 8th. The first three audition days are held at the Boone County Courthouse while the Finale is June 29th at the Missouri Theatre.

The two contestants picked from the first auditon were 26 and 41 respectively. That goes to show that anyone can enter. Fill out the form found on the link below to get in the "express" line at the audition.

Restaurant Review-Moe's

I had lunch today at Moe's Mexican Grill on 9th street and enjoyed the experience.

I went with the "Full Monty" w/ chicken, which is just a chicken soft taco, and a regular quesadilla, otherwise known as a "Sherman Klump". The taco came with a side of tortilla chips. I topped it all off with a Diet Coke. The damage was about $6.

Both items were good with the tortillas used tasting fresh as well as the ingredients. I somehow got a cup of queso dip, which I dipped the quesadilla in. From now on, I deffinatly need to order the queso dip because it is delicious and a pleasant addition to the 'dilla. The tortilla chips left alot to be desired and tasted stale.

I would recommend this over Chipotle any day of the week however. I think Chipotle uses too many spices making their food a tad spicy.

The best part of the meal was the coupon they gave me when I paid for my order. It apparently entitles me to "Buy One, Get One" or half off any menu item next time. This guarantees next time will be a better experience solely based on the fact I am a cheap, cheap man.

Mizzou Makes it 4 in a Row; Moves On

The Mizzou Baseball team defeated Pepperdine 8-3 minutes ago to move on to the Super Regional as the winner of the Malibu Regional.

After losing the opening game to Pepperdine last Friday, Mizzou reeled off two straight wins to advance from the loser's bracket to face Pepperdine. The Tigers then beat Pepperdine twice to win the Regional.

Taylor Parker went 5 and 2/3 innings, giving up 2 runs, to earn the win. Brock Bond went 4-5 with two RBIs to lead the Tigers, who had 14 hits on the day.

Mizzou advances to face Cal State-Fullerton beginning on June 9th in a best of three series for the right to head to Omaha, Nebraska for the College World Series.

MU Baseball Wins 3 Straight

The Baseball Tigers beat Pepperdine today 4-1 in Malibu to force a Monday game. MU will play Pepperdine again at 3 pm Monday for the right to advance to the Super Regional. Mizzou lost to Pepperdine to open the Malibu Regional and then won three straight games to advance to the Championship game.

Freshman Aaron Crow earned the complete game win. Crow's one run-six hit performance came after another Freshman Rick Zagone had pitched the Tigers to a 2-1 victory over UCLA earlier in the day. The complete games were career firsts for both pitchers.

The Lion's Choice on 9th Street finally closed. Maybe it was the crappy service that I always seemed to get there? I guess you can only get away with crappy food service if you happen to serve draft beer as well.

Nothing But Noodles has severed ties with the NBN name and will become Ninth Street Noodles. They will stay in the same location.

Moe's Grill finally opened next to Big 12. Sounds like a good place that could give Chipotle a run for its money.
